TMJ Treatments

TMJ treatment in Izmir is individually planned after evaluating jaw pain, joint sounds, limited mouth opening, chewing muscles, bite and bruxism findings.

The temporomandibular joint allows the lower jaw to move during speaking, chewing, swallowing and mouth opening. The joints, chewing muscles and dental bite function together as a coordinated system.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of conditions affecting the temporomandibular joints and surrounding muscles. Symptoms may include jaw pain, joint sounds, restricted mouth opening or discomfort while chewing.

At DrKuyumcu Dental Clinic, assessment of jaw joint symptoms includes not only the joints themselves but also the chewing muscles, jaw movements, dental bite, signs of bruxism and the patient's daily symptoms.

What Is the Temporomandibular Joint?

The temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the skull and are located on both sides of the face.

A disc within each joint contributes to coordinated movement. The joint works together with surrounding ligaments and chewing muscles to allow the lower jaw to move in different directions.

What Are the Symptoms of TMJ Disorders?

Possible signs and symptoms include:

  • Pain or tenderness around the jaw joint
  • Pain or fatigue in the chewing muscles
  • Clicking or other sounds during opening and closing
  • Limited mouth opening
  • Deviation of the jaw during movement
  • Temporary jaw locking
  • Discomfort while chewing
  • Facial muscle pain
  • Jaw muscle fatigue on waking

Similar symptoms may have different causes, so a clinical assessment is necessary before determining their origin.

What Causes TMJ Disorders?

Temporomandibular disorders may not have a single cause. Joint structures, chewing muscles and behavioral factors may contribute in different ways.

Factors that may be associated with symptoms include:

  • Teeth grinding and clenching
  • Excessive activity of the chewing muscles
  • Trauma affecting the jaw or facial area
  • Problems involving the joint disc
  • Certain degenerative joint changes
  • Long-standing parafunctional habits

Is Clicking in the Jaw Always a Problem?

Clicking or similar joint sounds may occur while opening or closing the mouth.

A joint sound alone does not necessarily mean that treatment is required. The presence of pain, limited movement, locking or functional impairment should also be considered.

What Is Jaw Locking?

Some patients may experience temporary or more persistent restriction of jaw movement while opening or closing the mouth.

Locking may be associated with structures within the joint, muscle spasm or other functional conditions.

Sudden, recurrent or persistent jaw locking should be clinically evaluated.

How Are TMJ Disorders Evaluated?

Evaluation begins by reviewing when the symptoms started, which movements aggravate them and how they affect everyday function.

Clinical examination may include assessment of:

  • Range of mouth opening
  • Lower jaw movements
  • Joint sounds
  • Tenderness of the chewing muscles
  • Pain around the joints
  • Signs of bruxism and tooth wear
  • Dental bite relationship

Appropriate imaging methods may be considered when additional information about the joint structures is required.

How Are TMJ Disorders Treated?

Treatment varies according to the source of the problem and the patient's symptoms.

In many cases, the initial approach focuses on conservative and reversible management options.

Depending on the clinical situation, management may include:

  • Modification of jaw-use habits
  • Conservative recommendations for the chewing muscles
  • A custom occlusal splint or night guard
  • Assessment of bruxism
  • Evaluation of existing restorations and bite
  • Additional multidisciplinary assessment when required

What Is an Occlusal Splint?

An occlusal splint is a removable oral appliance individually made to fit the patient's teeth.

Its purpose varies according to the clinical condition. In selected patients, it may be used to help protect the teeth and restorations from excessive forces or to assist in managing loads within the chewing system.

The same appliance is not suitable for every TMJ condition. The design, duration of use and follow-up schedule should be individualized.

Is Bruxism Related to TMJ Problems?

Clenching and grinding may keep the chewing muscles highly active for extended periods and may occur together with jaw symptoms in some patients.

However, not every temporomandibular disorder is caused by bruxism. The joint and muscle system should be evaluated separately.

Can TMJ Disorders Cause Head or Facial Pain?

Increased activity or tenderness of the chewing muscles may occur together with pain in the face, temples or surrounding areas in some patients.

Head and facial pain can have many different causes, so these symptoms should not automatically be attributed to the jaw joint.

Do TMJ Disorders Require Surgery?

Many patients with temporomandibular symptoms are initially assessed using conservative approaches.

Surgical or more invasive procedures are generally considered only for selected clinical conditions after appropriate specialist assessment.

What Can Help Support Jaw Joint Health?

Becoming aware of everyday habits that place additional load on the chewing system may be useful for some patients.

  • Unnecessary daytime clenching should be recognized and reduced when possible.
  • Prolonged gum chewing may be limited.
  • Repeated chewing of very hard foods may be reduced.
  • Habits that excessively strain the jaw should be avoided.
  • Prescribed splints or appliances should be used as instructed.
  • Follow-up examinations should be maintained.

TMJ Treatment at DrKuyumcu

Evaluation of temporomandibular disorders should not focus only on a joint sound or a single symptom.

At DrKuyumcu, the temporomandibular joints, chewing muscles, lower jaw movements, dental bite and signs of bruxism are evaluated as a whole.

Treatment is individualized with the aim of identifying the source of the symptoms, avoiding unnecessary irreversible intervention and supporting long-term function of the chewing system.

Frequently Asked Questions About TMJ Disorders

Is jaw clicking normal?

Joint sounds may occur without pain or functional impairment in some people. If clicking is accompanied by pain, locking or limited movement, clinical evaluation is recommended.

Can TMJ pain be felt around the ear?

Because the temporomandibular joint is located close to the ear, some patients may perceive discomfort in that area. Other possible ear-related causes may also need to be considered.

How long is a TMJ splint used?

Duration depends on the purpose of the appliance and the patient's clinical condition. Its use can be reassessed during follow-up visits.

Can teeth clenching cause TMJ pain?

Clenching may occur together with chewing muscle and jaw joint symptoms in some patients. However, not every TMJ disorder is caused by bruxism.

Can a locked jaw resolve on its own?

The cause and duration of locking can vary. Recurrent or persistent limitation of jaw movement should be clinically evaluated.

Is surgery necessary for TMJ disorders?

Not in every case. Conservative treatment options are generally evaluated first, while surgery is reserved for selected clinical situations.
